5 ethical organizations to support today
When I was a junior in college, I took this course called “Environmental Ethics.” I always considered myself an environmentalist and felt like my morals were pretty ethical… if that even makes sense. But, like all college students, I was living in a dream world, and this class completely blew my mind.
After the first week of class I booked it home and threw out all the meat in my fridge (in retrospect I obviously should have given it to someone… hello wasteful… but it was a dramatic gesture and at 20 years old I was a dramatic person) with the vow to go pescatarian for two weeks. After 6 months I switched to vegetarianism, and after 7 more years I switched to veganism.
9 years later and there’s no looking back, but I also know this lifestyle isn’t for everyone.
What (I hope) is for everyone, though, is helping our planet and its soulful beings in any way we can, whether that’s participating in meatless mondays, buying fair trade, fighting for social justice, or switching to cruelty-free products. Small changes add up, especially if 7 billion people make them!
So without further ado, here are some ethical companies I love, and why I think you should support them!
Honest: Jessica Alba’s brand that has everything from cosmetics to cleaning products. Fair and affordable prices. Cruelty-free and made with clean ingredients! Good for your body and soul.
Chnge: A sustainable clothing line that fights for social justice and equality. They have cool clothes and multiple campaigns, and they donate to other organizations with similar missions.
Farm Sanctuary: An organization dedicated to fighting the inhumane treatment of animals in the agricultural industry. If you’re not someone who can give up meat just yet but you want an ethical organization to donate to, this is it! They rescue animals, educate humans, and advocate for better laws.
Patagonia: The biggest retail company in the world that pays its workers fair wages and does not engage in child labor. Quality clothing coming from a quality organization right here.
The Equal Justice Initiative: This nonprofit is fighting to end mass incarceration along with racial and economic inequality. There is so much to read on their website and you can follow them on Instagram (@eji_org) for daily updates.
